Straightforward implementation of this correlator results in the need to perform 320 million complex multiplications per second. This signijicant requirement can be eliminated by using multiplierless correlators. In this paper, multiplierless correlators are designed based on constraining the real and imaginaly parts of correlator coeficients to be sums of powers of two. Sets of coeficients that yield good synchronization performance for simple A WGN channels are first identified; then their goodness for indoor communication environments is veriJied by simulation for multipath fading channels. Several multiplierless correlators are found. Comparison among these correlators ident$es a good one that requires to perfom only 26 additionhbtraction operations per correlator output while a similar synchronization pevformance can be maintained.' Effectiveness of RTS=CTS handshake in IEEE 802.11a Wireless LANs

The RTS=CTS reservation scheme in IEEE 802.11a Wireless LANs (WLANs) is employed to improve performance as it shortens packet collision duration and addresses the hidden station problem. An investigation has been conducted into how effective the RTS=CTS handshake is in reducing collision duration for 54 Mbit=s by extending an existing mathematical model for the particular packet overheads and d...

Timing Synchronization for 802.11a WLANs under Multipath Channels

In the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) standard adopted by the IEEE 802.11a standardization group, each data packet starts with a preamble, which consists of ten short training symbols followed by two long training symbols. In this paper, we present an efficient and straightforward coarse timing synchronization scheme based on the short training symbols. Simulation results illustrate that th...

Design and Implementation of an All - CMOS 802 . 11 a Wireless LAN Chipset

The tremendous growth in wireless LANs has generated interest in technologies that provide higher data rates and greater system capacities. The IEEE 802.11a standard [1], based on coded OFDM modulation [2], provides nearly five times the data rate and at least 20 times the overall system capacity compared to the incumbent 802.11b wireless LAN systems [3]. This article describes the design chall...

A Thesis for the Degree of Master Design for IEEE 802.11a based WLAN OFDM Modem

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the most promising techniques for future high data rate wireless communication systems. Several algorithms for wireless multimedia systems were proposed and adopted as standards. We design IEEE 802.11a based OFDM system with hardware description language and verify it’s performance. We evaluate the algorithms for the IEEE 802.11a OFDM ...
